With Sámi Blood, Amanda Kernell comes back to the cinematography with the subject of racism so as to show Northern people the race-based oppression taking place back in 1930’s.
Kernell’s new movie dives into the Scandinavian variation of disgraceful race-based obstacles oppressed by so-called “modern” nations around the world. The protagonist is a 14-year-old reindeer-breeding Sámi girl, exposing to the racism back in 1930’s. Due to heart-breaking racial repression, she starts dreaming of a new life. She has to become someone else and cut the ties of her past life.
From removal of Indigenous children from their parents to the prohibition of traditional “modus vivendi”, Sámi Blood depicts a new universe surrounded by anger and resentment. As in “Northern Great Mountain” and “Eutopia”, Kernell turns a universal problem into hard-hitting art. Sámi Blood is an intriguing, unnerving film.
